This version is made without borax and instead uses baking soda and contact lens solution to activate the slime. It also uses shaving cream to give it that ultra fluffy feel.

Fluffy Slime Ingredients
- 1 cup glue
- 3 cups shaving cream
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 2-3 tablespoons contact lens solution
- Food dye or acrylic paint (optional)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional; improves smoothness)
- 2 tablespoons lotion (optional; increases stretchiness)
Fluffy Slime Basics
There are a few things you should know before you make fluffy slime. If this is your first time making fluffy slime, be sure to read all the notes below before getting started.
What is fluffy slime?
You may be wondering what exactly is fluffy slime. Fluffy slime is just what is sounds like; fluffy, stretchy slimes that’s tons of fun to play with. It gets its fluffiness from shaving cream.
Fluffy Slime Notes
First of all, you want to make sure you are using shaving cream for this recipe. Shaving geldoes not produce the same fluffiness that shaving cream does.
Second, since you’re not using borax, your contact lens solutionmust contain boric acid. If it doesn’t it won’t be able to activate the slime, so double check the ingredient list before you purchase any solution.
For this recipe I used the Target brand Up & Up clear comfort multi-purpose solution. It does contain boric acid and is less expensive than the name brands.
Elmer’s has also come out with a cool product called Magical Liquid that replaces the baking soda and contact lens solution if you want to use less ingredients and have a more convenient option.
Although I use non-name brands for the contact lens solution, I do recommend you stick with Elmer’s glue. If you plan to make lots of slime (believe me, your kids won’t be able to get enough), I’d recommend buying the gallon Elmer’s glue. We have both the standard gallon and the clear gallon jug.
How To Make Fluffy Slime
- Add the glue to the bowl. We used regular Elmer’s glue for this recipe.
- Add the shaving cream, cornstarch, and color additive to the mixture. We used food dye to color the slime but you can also use acrylic paint.Note:The cornstarch is optional but will help give the slime a smoother feel. If you don’t have any don’t worry, but if you have some on hand I recommend trying it out.
- Mix the ingredients thoroughly, then add the baking soda and contact lens solution to the bowl.
- Use a fork to mix the baking soda and lens solution into the slime batter.
- After you mix, use your hands to start kneading the slime batter. You can dip your fingers in the contact lens solution to help it not stick as much to your hands.Note:Fluffy slime is very messy at this stage. It will be all over your hands and if you haven’t made slime before you might freak out and think you did something wrong, but don’t panic. Continue to knead, pull and work the slime until it starts to stick to itself and pull off of your hands. For us, this took about 3 minutes of kneading.
- You can stop here and play with the slime or you can add the lotion to the slime. Adding the lotion will make the slime even stretchier but it will also add moisture so it will get sticky again. Don’t worry; just keep mixing, pulling and playing with the slime and it will get back to it’s original texture.

This slime will lose it’s fluffiness over time (it seems to last about a day or two), so I suggest making it the same day you want to use it.
Fluffy Slime Troubleshooting
Q: What do I do if my slime is too sticky?
A: When you first begin kneading the fluffy slime it will beverysticky. This is completely normal, so don’t freak out! As you mix, knead and pull it apart, it will begin to stick to itself and form the slime. If after a couple of minutes, it’s still completely sticky, add a bit more contact lens solution (a teaspoon or two at a time). Make sure you fully incorporate the newly added solution before you add any more.
Q: Can you make fluffy slime with shaving gel?
A: Ok, technically the answer is yes, but I think shaving cream provides a much fluffier slime (and less sticky) so I would suggest sticking to shaving cream every time.
Q: I added the contact lens solution to the mixture, but it never made slime. What’s wrong?
A: First, make sure your contact lens solution contains boric acid. This isessential to making slime. If it doesn’t contain boric acid, it won’t work. If your contact lens solution does contain boric acid, then you probably need to add more to the mixture. Do a little at a time (2 teaspoons- 1 tablespoon), mix thoroughly, then reassess.
Q: Why is my fluffy slime stiff and breaking?
A: You likely added too much activator (either baking soda, contact solution or both). Sometimes you can add in some lotion to make the slime stretchier, but if you really overdid the activator you may have to start over.
Slime Safety
Please always have adult supervision when children are playing with slime. You also want to be sure that your child knows that this type of slime is not edible. If any part of the slime is every ingested, immediately call for medical advice.
Parents or another adult should always make the slime. This type of slime should not be used with children 3 and younger.
If your child has sensitive skin use gloves while playing with the slime or watch them to be sure the slime isn’t irritating to the skin.
Be sure to always have your child wash their hands after playing with slime.
