Jabily, Operculicarya decaryi

The Jabily is a thick stemmed succulent plant often grown as a bonsai tree. It is drought tolerant and does well in full sun in most places. It cannot tolerate freezing conditions. It grows a thick-fat trunk quickly, and its roots also swell to form unique contorted and twisted designs.

Jaboticaba, Myrciaria cauliflora

Hardy evergreen native from the highlands of Southern Brazil. Quite frost tolerant. Slow growing producing green fruit that turn black when ripe,on main trunk.

Jacaranda mimosifolia, Blue Jacaranda

This plant thrives in warm climates, sited in full sun and growing in sandy soils. Mature plants can survive in colder climates down to -7 °C, however, they may not bloom as profusely. Young plants are likely to die in such cold temperatures and should be grown in containers which can be moved in for proection in winter. In temperate climates, these are usually grown as pot plants to a height of 1M.

Artocarpus heterophyllus - orJackfruit - is an evergreen fruiting tree native to Borneo, Palawan, and Mindanao Island. It bears long leaves 4-25 x 2-12 cm. fruit weighing 4.5-5.0 kg that contain the true fruits that are yellow, and aromatic, commonly known as breadfruit

Jack Monkey Flower, Mimulus 'Jack'

Most of the species are annuals, herbaceous perennials or small shrubs. Patterns on the flowers give them the appearance resembling the grinning face of a monkey. The mimulus will freely flower in the spring. Trailing varieties are available and if grown in a bed, it will produce a mound of flowers, usually around 80 to 90 cm high. Plant in a moist, humous rich soil. 'Jack is a small shrub with dark green glossy leaves and numerous deep burgundy red flowers. It is hardy to about 20 degrees F.

Jack Pine, Pinus banksiana

Pine trees are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees. Some can grow to 80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching 15–45 m tall. The smallest are Siberian dwarf pine and the tallest is a 82m tall ponderosa pine located in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Jack Pine is a small to medium sized conifer that grows to 18m tall. It is a scraggly tree with a somewhat pyramidal shape that becomes open and irregular with age. If grown in shade, the lower branches often die but remain on the tree. Cones are curved, face forward along the branch and are often retained for several years.

Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon, Tragopogon pratensis

Tragopogon - salsify - is a hardy biennial root vegetable in the dandelion family, usually grown as an annual. It is also known as the oyster plant, because when cooked it has an oyster taste.The root somewhat resembles a long thin parsnip, with thick skin and creamy-white flesh that can be used in the same way as any root vegetable. Tragopogon pratensis is not usually grown for it's edible root. It is a wild-flower - but the root is edible. It has a yellow dandelion-like flower which closes at the first sign of bad weather, and usually anyway by noon - hence the common name of Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon

Jack-in-the-pulpit, Arisaema triphyllum

Arisaema triphyllum is a perennial plant growing from a corm. It is a variable species typically growing 65cm in height with three-parted leaves and flowers contained in a spadix that is covered by a hood. The outside of the hood is usually green or purple and the inside is usually striped purple and greenish white, though many colour variations exist. Grow in moist but well-drained humus-rich soil in a cool site, although it should not be too dry in summer.

A group 3 climber producing deep violet flowers which average 10 cm in size. Flowers on new wood. Group 3 clematis includes the varieties that start their flowering after mid-summer and continue well into Autumn or even into early winter, if it's mild. So-called herbaceous clematis are also included in this group. These varieties like to be cut back hard in late winter. Stems are pruned just above healthy pairs of buds about 12 - 18 inches above the ground. Group 3 clematis can be pruned at the start of winter as the old stems are of no further use. However, this practice is only advisable in very sheltered positions. Mild winter spells can produce active shoots which can then be hit by frosts.

A mushroom is the edible fruiting body of a fungus. The edible part consists of a cap, gills and stem, and some grow above ground, some below ground. Care should be taken with identification, as some mushrooms are toxic. 'Jack-O'-Lantern is a POISONOUS orange gilled mushroom that is somewhat similar in appearance to a some chanterelles, except that Jack-O'-Lanterns have true, sharp, non-forking gills, .It is said that the gills of Jack-O'-Lanterns are luminescent, glowing blue-green in the dark. It is a common mushroom east of the Rocky Mountains in Autumn
